Norwegian Designer Kristine Five Melvær (b. 1984) investigates the subject of object communication, bridging the disciplines of product design and graphic design. She focuses on the communicative potentials of objects as a means to create emotional bonds between object and user. By searching for the sensual essence of phenomena, she translates these qualities into sensuous objects with a Scandinavian simplicity.
Melvær holds a Master's degree in Industrial Design from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (2008) and a Master's degree in Visual Communication from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2012).
Melvær was nominated for Young Designer of the Year in Plaza Award 2012 and Nordic Designer of the Year in Nova Design Award 2013. Melvær was awarded Newcomer of the Year and the Soft Bowls were nominated for Accessory of the Year in the Bo Bedre Design Awards 2013. The Soft Vases are nominated for Accessory of the Year in the Bo Bedre Design Awards 2014. Melvær will receive the Riedel Award for her glass work this fall.
Melvær is currently collaborating with different producers developing a number of her prototype series for production. The Soft Bowls and Soft Vases are in production with When Objects Work, and the Dew vases, Seasons vases and Multi lanterns are in production with Magnor Glassverk. Melvær received a development grant from Grafill in 2013, and a three year working grant from Arts Council Norway in 2014.
The Seasons vases are inspired by the shifting colors of nature through a year.
The first vase is inspired by cherry blossoms and bright green leaves against the clear spring sky. The second vase dives into the summer sea with algae on the bottom and waves on top. The third vase shows golden autumn leaves gradually covering the green ground. The fourth vase interprets winter snow gently falling to the ground.
The patterns of the mouth blown vases are made using a technique that gives every vase an unique motif.
The vases can be used together or alone. By shifting the vases with the seasons, the vases can be used as a calendar reflecting the seasons outside.
The vases are in production with Magnor Glassverk.
