Weaving mill Mandal Veveri has produced textiles based on natural fibres since 1918. Using only the finest wool, mohair, linen and cotton as raw materials, the mill is one of Norway’s leading producers of woollen goods and costume fabrics, and is especially known for the textiles it weaves for the bunad – Norway’s national dress.
All yarns and dyes used in the production process are sourced from approved suppliers in Norway and Europe and the processes that the raw materials into finished products have remained fundamentally unchanged since the mill’s founding. However, machines and technology – and consequently the performance of the fabrics – have been greatly improved over time. Today, Mandal’s work combines traditional techniques and patterns with inspiring new designs and innovative applications for historic weaving methods. This is exemplified by the mill’s bunad blankets (designed by Andreas Engesvik), which use a historic pattern and age-old weaving knowledge to create a fabric with a distinct modern aesthetic. This blend of design innovation and traditional expertise has characterised Mandal throughout its history.
