Dern attended the University of Pennsylvania after his high school education. Bruce’s family had many connections to the political world; it was an influential family. His grandfather playing the role of the governor of Utah and the Secretary of War at the same time.

His godfather was Adlai Stevenson II who served as the governor of Illinois and was nominated for the officer of the President of the United States twice. Carson, Pirie and Scott stores were started by Bruce’s great grandfather.

Career

Before arriving in Hollywood, Bruce first got involved in theatre acting in Philadelphia. Dern’s first movie role was in the 1960, in “Wild River,” and he then got more meaty roles in “Marnie,” and “Hang ‘Em High.” Because he was cast in many westerns, many knew him for villains’ roles in Support Your Local Sheriff! and The Cowboys.

Yet the latter was not the only chance for Dern to demonstrate his versatility as an actor: in “Silent Running” he got the role of a sensitive ecologist. In the 70s he acted in such films as “The Great Gatsby,” “Posse,” and “Family Plot,” the movie made by Hitchcock before his death.
